Jumbo Bats Stay Hot in Second Saturday Victory at Apprentice, 12-4

HAMPTON, Va. – Sophomore SS Will Shackelford went 4 for 5 with six rbis and two runs as the Tufts University baseball team continued an offensive assault at War Memorial Stadium with a 12-4 win over Apprentice School on Saturday afternoon.

Rory Ziomek didn't allow an earned run while earning a three-inning save

Earlier on Saturday, the Jumbos had 23 hits in a 22-0 victory over St. Vincent College at War Memorial. Tufts kept on hitting with 17 more against host Apprentice. For the two games, the Jumbos combined for 34 runs and 40 hits.

Jumbo senior Matt Rothstein pitched five scoreless innings as the visitors built a 12-0 lead. He ran into trouble in the sixth, but earned the win allowing eight hits and three runs with no walks and two K's in 5.1 innings.

Apprentice starter Paul Jones blanked Tufts through three innings before Shackelford and senior 2B Tom Petry staked the Jumbos to a 4-0 lead in the fourth. After sophomore CF Casey Santos-Ocampo singled and sophomore C Eric Schnepf walked, Shackelford doubled to left for a 2-0 Tufts lead. Petry, who had hit a three-run home run against St. Vincent, connected on a two-run job scoring Shackelford and the Jumbos led 4-0.

Tufts came right back with two more runs in the fourth and Shackelford was in the middle of it again. With junior LF Mike McLaughlin and Schnepf on base after singles, Shackelford tripled to center field scoring both and making it 6-0.

The Jumbos blew the game open in the sixth and again Shackelford was the key contributor. His two-run single was joined by rbis from Nick Falkson, Santos-Ocampo, McLaughlin and Oscar Kutch providing the 12-0 cushion.

Apprentice put together four singles, a walk and a fielder's choice for three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Gevin Nixon led off with a base hit and Cody Hendrickson had a one-out single. Nick Morrissette and Robbie Watkins followed with singles, scoring Nixon and chasing Rothstein. Reliever Kevin Galasso walked in another run and a fielder's choice by Darrius Harris produced the third Apprentice score of the inning.

The Builders would add an unearned run on two hits and a Tufts error in the ninth. Jumbo senior Rory Ziomek picked up a three-inning save, allowing three hits and no earned runs with seven K's and a walk.

Petry was 3 for 6 with two rbis and a run at the top of the Tufts order. Santos-Ocampo also finished a great day with a 3 for 6 performance scoring two runs. McLaughlin (2 hits, 2 runs) and Schnepf (2 runs) had crooked numbers in their stat lines as well.

Hendrickson had three of Apprentice's 11 hits and scored a run, while Nixon was 2 for 5 with a run. Jones suffered the pitching loss giving  up eight hits and six runs with nine strikeouts and four walks in 4.2 innings.

The Jumbos finish their three-game stay at War Memorial Stadium when they play St. Vincent again tomorrow at 9 a.m. Apprentice School (14-10) hosts Thomas Nelson CC on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
