Early Commencement Ceremony Held for Seniors on NCAA Baseball Team

MEDFORD - In what has become a tradition at Tufts University, a special commencement ceremony was held on Tuesday afternoon to graduate the seniors of the Jumbo baseball program. The event was held inside the Coolidge Room at Ballou Hall and presided over by Tufts President Anthony P. Monaco.

Head coach John Casey's team could potentially miss Sunday's official Commencement exercises while they are on the road for NCAA Championship Regional games. Tufts is playing at Onondaga Baseball Complex in Syracuse, New York where they will open NCAA action against The College of New Jersey on Thursday at 6 p.m. The regional tournament continues through Sunday.

In 2009 when the Tufts softball team was going to miss Commencement while playing at the NCAA Finals in New Jersey, a special ceremony was held for the team's seniors. In the years since, the seniors on each team who would miss Commencement due to away games have been accommodated with this special ceremony.

Tufts Trustee Dan Doherty joined President Monaco to celebrate the baseball graduates on Tuesday. Jumbos Harry Brown, Oscar KutchCharlie McQuinnTom Petry, Matt Rothstein, Tim SuperkoSperos Varinos and Rory Ziomek received their degrees.
