ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Colin Cubit and Jon DiBartolomeo made four free throws apiece in the last 53 seconds to help Rochester wrap up a 67-61 victory over Tufts University in the second game of the Chuck Resler Classic at the Louis Alexander Palestra on Saturday night.
Rochester finished the two-day event at 2-0. The Yellowjackets defeated Green Mountain College of Vermont, 69-59, on Friday. Tufts is 0-2. The Jumbos lost to Brockport, 60-55, on Friday. Brockport is 2-0. The Golden Eagles defeated Green Mountain, 63-50, in Saturday's first game.
Cubit's four free throws were his only points of the night. DiBartolomeo scored 11 points and had four assists. Mike Labanowski scored 12 points for UR . He sank three three-point goals. Marcus Roberson had 10 points and six rebounds.
Senior Dave Beyel (Ocean City, NJ) scored 24 points for Tufts and senior tri-captain Jon Pierce (Belmont, MA) added 16. The Jumbos shook off a cold-shooting first half (7 of 26, 27%) to hit 52% in the second half (14 of 27).
Two free throws from DiBartolomeo gave Rochester a 50-42 lead with 8:33 left. Tufts scored six straight - two free throws by Scott Anderson (Sudbury, MA), and jumpers in the paint by Pierce and junior Matt Galvin (Floral Park, NY - to pull within 50-48 with 5:19 left. The Jumbos drew even at 51-51 on a lay-up and free throw by Beyel with 4:31 left. Labanowski's three-pointer 34 seconds later put Rochester ahead to stay.
The tournament MVP was Jermaine Johnson of Brockport. The All-Tournament Team selections included Josh Zenkel of Brockport, Gerard Johnson of Green Mountain , Roberson and David Gould of Rochester and Pierce.
