MILTON -- Curry College junior Sean Sylvester scored a power-play goal with 2:14 remaining in the third period, lifting the host Colonels to a 4-3 victory over Tufts in non-conference hockey action on Tuesday night at Max Ulin Hockey Rink.
Curry remained undefeated early in their 2009-10 campaign at 5-0. They got a goal and an assist from freshman Michael Guzzo and two assists by freshman Jonathan Miller. Tufts (0-2-1) was led by two goals from sophomore Matt Amico (Buffalo, NY) and two assists by freshman Dylan Plimmer (Phoeniz, AZ).
The Colonels skated to a 2-0 lead with goals 63 seconds apart in the first period. Steven Mohler scored on a power-play at 14:09 and then Guzzo scored his sixth of the season at 15:21. However, the Jumbos tied the game at 2-2 by the first intermission with two goals in the final four minutes of the period. Amico scored at 16:16 and then junior Dylan Cooper (Colorado Springs, CO) scored on a power-play with just 17 seconds left in the period.
The teams traded scores again with early and late goals in the middle stanza. Ross Enmark scored for Curry just 1:04 into the period for a 3-2 lead. The Jumbos, who had been unable to capitalize on two Colonel penalties earlier in the period, tied the game at 18:09 on Amico's second. Plimmer assisted on both goals by Amico.
The action was fast and furious in the third period, with the teams combining for 36 shots. The Colonels had a late 21-second power-play and they made the most of it when Sylvester scored with just three seconds to go in the man-advantage situation. Tufts had a power-play for the final 1:04 of regulation, and they pulled sophomore goalie Scott Barchard (Reading, MA) with 39 seconds remaining. However, they could not net the tying goal.
Robert Dawson, who came on in relief for Curry starter Zachary Cardella in goal, got the win with 24 saves in 35:11 of action. Cardella had stopped 12 shots in 24:49 of play. The Colonels were two for three on power-plays. Barchard finished with 44 saves, including 18 in the third period.
Tufts plays in the Rutland Herald Invitational at Castleton, Vermont starting on Saturday against Neumann at 3:00 pm. The Colonels play at Manhattanville on Saturday at 3:00 pm.
