Jumbo Hockey Advances to Codfish Bowl Final With Shoot-out Victory Over Johnson & Wales

BOSTON - The Tufts hockey team advanced to the championship game of the 47th Annual Codfish Bowl with a shoot-out victory against Johnson & Wales University in opening round action on Friday afternoon at UMass Boston. The teams tied 3-3 during regulation and overtime, then Tufts took the shoot-out 1-0 on a goal by junior Dylan Plimmer (Phoenix, AZ).
The Jumbos, now 4-5-1 overall, will face host UMass Boston in the Codfish final on Saturday at 4 pm. They defeated Southern New Hampshire University 9-0 in Friday's other first-round game. Johnson & Wales (7-3-2) will face SNHU in the consolation game at 1 pm.
Jumbo sophomore Garrett Sider (Longwood, FL) tallied his fifth goal of the year on a power-play to put Tufts up 1-0 at 3:44 during a penalty-filled first period. The Wildcats were called for nine penalties in the first 20 minutes, while Tufts had five. The Jumbos had a 21-6 advantage in shots for the period.
On another power play in the second, Plimmer scored at 15:09 for a 2-0 Tufts lead. JWU was whistled for five more penalties in the period, while Tufts stayed out of the box. It looked like the Jumbos would take a two-goal lead into the final period, but Justin Decowski scored with 29 seconds left to pull the Wildcats within 2-1. The teams combined for 33 shots in the second standza, with Tufts holding a slim 17-16 advantage.
Johnson & Wales then tied the score at 2-2 6:42 into the third period on the first goal of the season by Tony Galante. Jumbo sophomore David Carson (Avon Lake, OH) scored his first career goal at 12:42 to give Tufts a 3-2 lead. However, with Tufts down a man, the Wildcats tied the game at 3-3 on a power play tally by Trevor Jewell with 2:49 remaining in regulation.
The Jumbos dominated the five-minute overtime with an 8-1 advantage in shots. JWU goalie Matt Cooper saved them all, and finished the game with 53 saves. Tufts had a 56-36 margin in shots overall. Jumbo senior Scott Barchard (Reading, MA) had 33 saves.
With a shoot-out needed to determine who would advance in the tournament, neither team scored in the first round. After the Wildcats missed on their second attempt, Plimmer scored to give Tufts an edge. JWU did not score on their next attempt to give Tufts the win.
Carson led Tufts with a goal and an assist. Jason Pietrasiak had a multi-point game for Johnson & Wales with two assists.
