Gu Earns NESCAC's First Men's Swimming Performer of the Week Award of Season

MEDFORD – Junior Roger Gu of the Tufts University men's swimming & diving team has won this week's New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Performer of the Week honor after a strong season debut against Middlebury College on Sunday.

Gu swept the freestyle sprint events including a pool record as the Jumbos won 168-89 over the Panthers in Tufts' season-opener at home. He posted a Hamilton Pool record time of 20.60 seconds in the 50 freestyle, while also winning the 100 free (47.41) and the 200 free (1:43.90). He also anchored the 200 medley relay to a 1:34.07 victory at the start of the meet. Gu was joined by senior tri-captain Kingsley Bowen and juniors Matthew Manfre and Costantino Camerano in the event.

This is the second conference Performer of the Week award for Gu. He also received the recognition a year ago almost to the day as he was honored on November 20, 2017.

Gu broke two conference records at the championship meet last season, winning the 50 freestyle in 19.95 seconds and swimming a 43.44 in the 100 freestyle preliminaries. He was then the national runner-up in the 100 free and was fourth in the 50 free at NCAA's, as well as part of the NCAA 400 freestyle relay (2:59.62) that set a NESCAC record. He was a leader of the first Tufts team to win a conference championship in 2017-18.
