NEWPORT, R.I. -- On a beautiful Saturday afternoon, the Tufts University men's tennis team visited Newport, Rhode Island for the season opener against the Seahawks of Salve Regina University. The Jumbo team has almost an entirely new face with the exception of #1 doubles and #2 singles. Several starters from last year are either out with injuries or due to religious holiday.

Doubles play started favorably for Tufts as sophomores Morrie Bossen (Chicago, IL) and Sam Laber (Cincinnati, OH) finished their match quickly and the Jumbos drew first blood. The freshman duo of Ben Barad (San Rafael, CA) and Andrew Lutz (Baltimore, MD) moved extremely well together and aggressively to take home another "W".

At #1 doubles, junior Jake Fountain (Nassau, Bahamas) once again paired up with sophomore Kai Victoria (Miami, FL) in an impressive win as the two were sticking plenty of aggressive volleys.

In singles, the three freshmen - Lutz, Barad and Mark Westerfield (Menlo Park, CA) - dropped a total of three games to win in straight sets. Victoria and Fountain also found their
groove and played aggressive tennis to close out their matches in straight sets. At #1, Laber won the first set handily, but in the second his opponent played fearlessly in the zone hitting plenty of winners from behind the baseline to take a break and to try to serve the set out for the split. Laber broke back with steady play and forced the match to the tie-break. In the breaker, Laber's steady aggressive baseline play was enough to get the ninth win for the Jumbos.

Coach Doug Eng's team competes at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional Championships this weekend at Williams College.
