ORANGE, Calif. -- The Tufts softball team had 30 hits on Monday, leading to two more wins at the Sun West Tournament hosted by Chapman University. The Jumbos (4-0) defeated St. Mary's University from Minnesota 10-0 in a five-inning game in the morning. They kept it up with a 12-7 victory against Lewis & Clark College from Oregon in the afternoon.
Senior Christy Tinker (Woodbridge, CT) went 4 for 7 with six RBI and three runs scored in the two games for Tufts. She was one of six Jumbos who had four or more hits on the day. Junior Julia Silberman (Somers, NY) hit two home runs, and newly named NESCAC Player of the Week Emily Beinecke (Concord, MA) was 6 for 8 with five runs scored overall.
Junior Izzie Santone (Madison, CT) was the beneficiary of 10 runs on 14 hits in the St. Mary's game. She didn't need it, shutting out the Cardinals on five hits and no walks. She had runners on base in every inning, but worked to strand six Cardinals.
Senior right fielder Stefanie Tong (Burlingame, CA) was 3 for 3 in the game. She knocked in three runs in the sixth inning with an RBI single and a two-run base hit. Tinker also had three RBI in the game. A Silberman two-run home run also came during the eight-run fourth inning for the Jumbos.
Tufts took a 5-0 lead after two innings against Lewis & Clark. Tinker hit a two-run triple in the first and Beinecke singled home a run and scored in the second. Starting pitcher Rebecca DiBiase (Wellesley, MA) blanked the Pioneers through three innings before running into trouble in the fourth. L&C scored four times, including two runs on a double by junior 2B Jamie Moon.
With their lead down to 5-4, Tufts scored six runs in the sixth inning to open it up. Senior shortstop Casey Sullivan (Berlin, CT) smacked a two-run home run, Silberman hit a pinch solo shot, and sophomore catcher Mira Lieman-Sifry (Hastings-on-Hudson, NY) added a two-run single to right. In the bottom of the sixth, a two-run single by L&C's Caroline DeVincenzi chased DiBiase from the game, but the first-year pitcher earned her first collegiate victory after classmate Aly Moskowitz (Westfield, NJ) came in and got the final five outs.
Beinecke finished the game 4 for 5 with three runs and two RBI. Sullivan and Tinker, both 3 for 4 with three RBI and two runs scored, were also big sticks.
The Jumbos take a break from Sun West play tomorrow and head to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges where they will face the Athenas at 3:30 pm, and then take on the University of Redlands at Claremont beginning at 5:30 pm. Tufts has now won 48 of its last 51 games.
