ORANGE, Calif. -- In its annual sojourn to the Sun West Tournament, the Tufts softball team opened its 2010 season with a pair of victories against LaSierra University on Sunday afternoon at El Camino Real Park. The Jumbos won the first game 5-3, then followed with a 9-0 victory in six innings.

Playing as the home team in the first game, the Jumbos got a three-run double from 2B Emily Beinecke (Concord, MA) in her first collegiate at-bat to go ahead 3-0. She finished the game 2 for 3.

After a two-run third inning that included an RBI single by sophomore LF Lena Cantone (Southington, CT) gave Tufts a 5-1 lead, senior Erin Gallagher (Brooklyn, NY) took it the rest of the way from the pitcher's circle. She went the distance, allowing three runs for her first collegiate victory.

Center fielder Amber Lozano drove home all three runs for LaSierra. She had an RBI single in the top of the first, initially giving LSU a 1-0 lead. In the top of the seventh, she hit a one-out single that brought home two runs and put the tying run at the plate. However, Gallagher retired the next two hitters for the complete game.

A two-run double by junior LF Christy Tinker (Woodbridge, CT) in the top of the first got the Jumbos going in game two. They led 5-0 thanks to two LaSierra miscues in the second inning. In the fourth inning, senior shortstop Casey Sullivan (Berlin, CT) tripled home a run and scored, bringing the Jumbos to a 7-0 advantage.

All this was more than enough for first year starting pitcher Aly Moskowitz (Westfield, NJ). In her first collegiate start, she allowed just three hits and no runs over six innings for the win. Tufts cut down a potential run at the plate on a double-steal in the second inning. Otherwise, no LaSierra runners reached third.

Tinker added a two-run double in the sixth to finish 2 for 3 with four RBI. Sullivan was 2 for 4 with three runs and an RBI. New lead-off hitter Lizzy Iuppa (Paramus, NJ) had three hits in four at-bats and scored two runs.

The Jumbos continue play at the Sun West Tournament on Monday with games against St. Mary's (MN) at 8 am and versus Lewis & Clark (OR) at noon. Both times are PST.
