MEDFORD - This Sunday (Mar. 12), Tufts University Women's Fencing will have seven team members competing at the NCAA Northeast Regionals held in Yale University's Wayne Whitney Gymnasium.
Tufts' Regional qualifiers are juniors Bridget Marturano and Nayab Ajaz in saber, senior Juliet Hewes and sophomore Zoe Howard in foil and senior co-captain Anna Gooch, senior co-captain Chandler Coble and junior Grace Tellado in epee.
This is the fourth consecutive year (2014-17) that Gooch and Hewes will compete at the Regional. Marturano qualified for the third straigh season (2015-17), while Coble will also be there for the third time having qualified previously in 2014 and 2016. Tellado (2015) and Ajaz (2016) were at Regionals once before. It's the first time for Howard.
"Regionals is a unique opportunity for us as a Division III team," Gooch said. "This is our chance to measure ourselves against Division 1 teams, who dominate Regionals. Having seven fencers qualify is really fantastic, and I'm excited to see how far we can go tomorrow."
Marturano is the highest-seeded Jumbo heading into the Regional. She is ranked 24th in the saber division. She placed eighth at the New England Intercollegiate Fencing Championships last Saturday. In Northeast Fencing Conference (NEIFC) action this season, Marturano posted a 23-7 record for a 76.7 winning percentage that ranked eighth in the league.
Hewes advanced the furthest for the Jumbos at the Regional hosted by Vassar last year. She was one of 21 fencers who advanced to the third round in foil. She won three of her four first-round matches and was +7 in touches scored compared to touches received. Her two wins and -5 touches in the second round earned her a third-round spot. Last week at the NEIFC meet she was fifth in foil.
Joining Marturano as Tufts' top winners in conference bouts this season are Howard in foil (21-11, .656), Hewes in foil (19-11, .633) and Tellado in epee (17-12, .556).
For the Regional there are 46 entries in the epee division, 40 in saber and 38 in foil. The day will start at approximately 9:00 a.m. with the women's epee and saber events. Women's foil will begin at 10:00 a.m.
