WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- The Tufts University women's tennis team, ranked 12th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll this spring, returned to action with an 8-1 victory at Northwood University on Monday afternoon.
The Jumbos, who are on their spring break trip, had not played as a team since October 4. They showed no signs of rust, winning all three doubles matches and five of six in singles. This was the first of five matches that the Jumbos will play in Florida this week.
Two-time ITA National Small College doubles champions Julia Browne (Old Brookville, NY) and senior tri-captain Meghan McCooey (Cumberland, RI) won a competitive match 9-7 to begin their final spring together. The #3 pair of Edwina Stewart (London, ENG) and first-year Lauren Hollender (Newton, MA) made quick work of their opponents in an 8-2 victory.
First-year Janice Lam (San Francisco, CA) and Hollender were nearly perfect at the bottom of the singles order. Lam lost one set at #6 and Hollender dropped two at #5. Browne, first year Lindsay Katz (Owings Mills, MD), and Stewart also won singles matches.
Tufts improved to 3-0 as a team for the 2009-10 season. Coach Kate Bayard's team plays at Lynn University in Boca Raton on Tuesday.
