Allen and Theiss Lead Tufts Women’s Track & Field to Fourth at New England Champioship

NORTHAMPTON - With two victories and five top-three finishes, the Tufts women's track & field team placed fourth of 22 teams at the New England Championship on Saturday at Smith College.
Williams won the team title with 143 points, edging MIT by one. Bowdoin placed third with 72 points. The Jumbos and Middlebury rounded out the top five with 64 and 58 points respectively.
Two event victories led the Jumbos. Senior Heather Theiss (Hewlett, NY) won the pole vault with her clearance of 11'11 3/4" (3.65m). That mark currently ranks tenth nationally.
Junior Kelly Allen (Norton, MA) scored 18 points for Tufts. She claimed the individual title in the shot put with her toss of 42'5 1/4" (12.93m) and finished second in the weight throw with a heave of 57'4 3/4" (17.49m). Backing Allen in the shot put was senior Ronke Oyekunle (Harvard, MA). She launched it 40'9 3/4" (12.44m) to finish third.
The Jumbos recorded two other individual third-place finishes. Senior Nakeisha Jones (Boston, MA) took third in the triple jump with her leap of 37'11 1/2" (11.57m). On the track, sophomore Jana Hieber (Goffstown, NH) notched a top-three finish in the 600 with her time of 1:37.67.
The 4x800 meter relay team also took third. The quartet of first-year Lauren Gormer (Dayton, OH), sophomore Laura Peterson (Omaha, NE) and seniors Sarah Boudreau (Dover, MA) and Anya Price (Natick, MA) clocked a time of 9:35.68 to score six points for Tufts.
The Jumbos fell one place from their finish a year ago and will look to bounce back in the upcoming championship meets.
Next week, coach Kristen Morwick's team will compete in the Open New England Championship at Boston University.
