|Freshman Lauren Diaz ran the lead-off leg for the 4x8|
WILLIAMSTOWN – The Jumbo 4x800-meters relay ran the second-fastest time in school history as the Tufts University women's outdoor track & field team competed at the 2017 New England Division III Championships hosted by Williams College on Saturday.
Tufts' time of 9:14.86 was run by freshman Lauren Diaz, freshman Julia Gake, freshman Nicole Kerrigan and senior co-captain Samantha Cox. The only Tufts 4x8 foursome which has been faster was Amy Wilfert, Kayley Pettoruto, Jackie Ferry and Stephanie McNamara with a blistering 9:10.53 in 2009. In today's race, the Jumbos were just 0.04 behind second place MIT (9:14.82).
The Jumbos' top individual finish today was a third-place effort by junior Jennifer Sherwill in the discus throw. Her best attempt was 130'10" (39.87m). She also had a 13th-place finish in the shot put (37'6 ¾" – 11.45m).
With 20 team points scored today, Tufts tied for 10th place at the New England Division III meet.
Freshman Haley Barthel scored sixth in the 5,000 meters with an 18:00.35 mark, The Jumbos received seventh-place points from senior Lindsay Atkeson in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with an 11:33.27 finish. Freshman Julia Kissel also had a seventh-place showing in the javelin throw, where she matched her season-best with 130'2" (39.69m) distance. That's currently the 29th ranked mark in Division III.
Tufts also added a point in the 4x400-meter relay which closed the women's competition. The Jumbo foursome had a 4:06.91 time. The Tufts line-up for the race was not immediately available.
Senior co-captain Rita Donohoe was just outside of a scoring spot with her 58.19 time in the 400 meters for ninth place. Freshman Jane Reed from MIT was eighth in the event in 58.11 seconds. Cox wasn't far from scoring in the 1,500 meters. Her 4:41.59 took 10th place,
Tufts will return to Williams College next weekend for the Open New England Championships.
