Tufts' SAAC Announces Schedule of Events Benefitting Mental Health Next Week

MEDFORD - The Tufts University Athletics Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), working in conjuction with the New England Small College Athletic Conference SAAC, has developed a schedule of online activities to promote and benefit mental health awareness and care. The program will run next week from March 29 through April 2.

Hannah Isenhart, a Tufts senior and member of the women's soccer team who led SAAC's efforts in this initiative, said the events and speakers scheduled for next week are primarily aimed at breakng down the stigma surrounding mental health. Multiple events are scheduled for each day to accommodate varying schedules and to facilitate broader participation. One of the many impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, the disruptiton to lives of student-athletes has been prevalent and will be the focus of next week's events.

"If someone sprains their ankle, they wouldn't think twice about going to the trainer, but it is less black and white when it comes to getting help for emotional well-being," Isenhart said. "The cancelation of athletics due to COVID-19 has impacted student-athletes’ mental health. Tufts SAAC thought it would be crucial to have a week dedicated to promoting resources and facilitating discussions around mindfulness, self-compassion, empowerment, and how not competing impacts one's identity."
