MEDFORD - The Jonathan M. Tisch College of Civic Life at Tufts University invites you to join a conversation with Assistant Coach of the NBA’s Memphis Grizzlies and Tufts alumna Sonia Raman coming up on Wednesday, September 22 at 6:15 PM. The virtual event is being cosponsored by Tufts Athletics and the Office of Alumni Engagement.
A 1996 Tufts graduate, Raman is the first female NBA assistant coach of Indian origin. She was previously the head women’s basketball coach at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) for 12 seasons, where she has the most coaching victories in the program’s history. She led the Engineers to win the program’s first two New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) championships in 2018 and 2019 and reached the championship game in 2020.
Raman herself played basketball while a student at Tufts and later returned to campus as assistant coach of the women’s basketball team. Prior to her coaching career, Raman, a Boston College Law School grad, worked for the federal Labor Department and for an investment firm in the risk and compliance division. She was previously selected to serve on the Coaches Council for the Alliance of Women Coaches, an organization dedicated to leading the field of women coaches, at all levels, by providing support, resources, events and programs which address the needs and interests of its members.
