|Freshman Kyle Slinger pitched seven shutout innings for the Jumbos
FAYETTEVILLE, NC - The Tufts baseball team had 16 hits, and freshman Kyle Slinger (Danville, CA) pitched seven innings allowing just four hits and no runs as the Jumbos continued their fine weekend down south with a 14-1 victory at Methodist on Wednesday afternoon.
The Jumbos (4-1) put together three hits in the first inning to score two runs and take the early lead. Junior RF Eric Weikert (Avondale Estates, GA) and freshman 3B Wade Hauster (Palo Alto, CA) hit rbi singles.
Methodist's Matt Quick drew a lead off walk in the bottom of the first, but after being sacrificed to second, he was left stranded. Tufts then used a three-run home run by senior DH Matt Collins (Hopkinton, MA) in the second to help go ahead 6-0. They tacked on two more runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Freshman catcher Nick Barker (Weymouth, MA) had a two-run double in the fifth and Weikert added two more rbi with a single in the sixth.
Errors proved costly for the Monarchs as the Jumbos scored a run in the seventh and three in the eighth for the 14-0 advantage. Freshman CF Connor McDavitt (Holden, MA) stroked a run-scoring double in the sixth, while junior 1B Tom Howard (Rockville Centre, NY) brought home two with a single up the middle.
Slinger, making his first collegiate start, struck out seven and walked four. Methodist would get on the board in the bottom of the ninth after Dustin Brown and Nick Spell drew walks against senior reliever Jake Crawford (Boise, ID). David Lutz reached on an error and Cody Handshaw picked up a RBI on a bases loaded walk.
Collins finished 3 for 4 with three runs scored and three rbi for Tufts. Junior 2B Scott Staniewicz (Boca Raton, FL) was 3 for 5 with two runs and an rbi in the leadoff spot. Weikert (2 for 5, three rbi, two runs), Hauser (3 for 5, rbi, run) and Barker (2 for 5, two rbi, run) also had multiple hits.
The Monarchs (14-13) had four hits in the game from Trey Such, Tyler Younger, Steven Kirby and Cody Molosky. Younger finished 1-for-2 at the plate. Josh Clarke started on the mound and threw 1.2 innings with five hits and two strikeouts. Dylan Moore, Michael Inman, Reid Berry, Ross Leggett and Chris Barger threw in relief.
Tufts is at North Carolina Wesleyan on Thursday at 3 pm. Methodist will be back in action on Saturday when they host nationally ranked Shenandoah University at 1 pm.
