MEDFORD - Tufts University baseball coach John Casey was in Switzerland last week (Jan. 14-20) to lead an International Sports Groups (ISG) coaching clincic for the Swiss Baseball Federation.
This was Coach Casey's third international trip for the ISG. The other clinics he led were to Sweden in 2017 and Curacao in 2018. Coach Casey became associated with the ISG clinics through fellow American Baseball Coaches Association board member Tom O'Connell.
Joining Coach Casey in Switzerland were Hope College head baseball coach Stu Firtz and Boston College HS head coach Norm Walsh. The clinic was for Swiss coaches at all levels from the national team to local club coaches. Participation by the Swiss Federation was outstanding as more than 40 Swiss coaches were in attendance at the clinics. Coaches Casey, Fritz and Walsh conducted over 20 clinic sessions during the two-day event, including instruction on pitching mechanics, base-running, hitting philosophy and the mental game.
The group also managed to get to the top of the Schilthorn, a 9,744-foot summit in the Bernese Alps of Switzerland.
It has been a busy first month of 2020 for Coach Casey. On January 3 he was inducted into the ABCA Hall of Fame in Nashville.
Coach Casey's 37th season as head coach of the Jumbos begins on March 13 with games against Castleton and Johnson & Wales in Hampton, Virginia.
