Sowell, Volgende On 2021 All-New England Teams

MEDFORD - Tufts University sophomore catcher Clay Sowell and junior pitcher Michael Volgende have been named to the 2021 All-New England Region team.

Sowell was selected as the All-Region first team catcher, while Volgende is among the third team starting pitchers. This is the first D3baseball All-Region honor for both players.

One of the top sluggers in New England this spring, Sowell hit .404 with seven doubles and six home runs to amass a .877 slugging percentage. A first team NESCAC All-Conference selection, Sowell had 25 runs batted in his 15 starts. He was named to the All-Tournament team at the NCAA Auburn, New York Regional where he hit .417 with four doubles, five rbis and four runs scored.

Volgende was the NESCAC Pitcher of the Year for the 2021 season. He finished with a 4-2 record and 3.86 earned run average. In helping lead Tufts to the NESCAC East Division pennant, he went 2-0 with a 0.69 era and 1.00 walks and hits to innings pitched ratio. Also on the NESCAC first team, Volgende pitched seven innings allowing six hits and no runs in a victory at Trinity College on May 1.

Head coach John Casey's Jumbos were NESCAC and NCAA Regional finalists while compiling a 15-8 record during the shortened 2021 spring season.
