Golf Plays for NESCAC Championship This Weekend in New York

MEDFORD - The Jumbo men's golf team will look to challenge for the 2022 New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Championship on Saturday and Sunday at Yahnundasis Golf Course in New Hartford, New York. Hamilton College is hosting the conference championship.

Expected to start for head coach George Pendergast's Jumbos are senior tri-captain Travis Clauson, sophomore Jack Meehan, junior Kemp Bassett, senior tri-captain Adam Schwimmer and junior Ben Blase. Saturday tee times begin at 10:30 am, and then Sunday tee times begin at 10 am.

"It should be a tight competition," Coach Penderfast said. "Really any one of five teams could win. It depends who plays well over two days."

Last week's Williams Spring Invitational featured nine of the 10 conference teams who will be in action this weekend. The Jumbos were fifth overall, but scored second on Sunday. Clauson's two-day 150 tied for fifth individually, while Bassett tied for 10th with his 154 tournament score (77-77).

Also this spring, Tufts tied for second at Trinity's Detrick Invitational where Blase tied for second individually with 75-77-152 scores. The Jumbos won the one-day Western New England Classic as Meehan and Clauson tied for medalist honors with 73s.

The Jumbos seek their first-ever NESCAC Championship. After several years of playing a fall qualifying tournament to determine the four teams that played for the conference championshp in the spring, the NESCAC Tournament is returning to a format that includes every team in the conference this year. Last season when the 2021 NESCAC Champion was determined via the combined team scores from NESCAC #1 and NESCAC #2 post-season events, Tufts was third just one shot off conference champion Middlebury. The Jumbos were second in the 2003 conference tournament, a 10-team event.

Meehan as the medalist at the NESCAC #1 event last spring with a two-under par 70. Following the cancellaton of the 2020 event due to Covid, and last year's unique format, this wll be the first NESCAC Championship play under normal tournament format for all five of Tufts' starters.

This weekend's winner will receive the conference automatic berth in the NCAA Division III Golf Championship.
