Savage Scores 20, Rogers Turns in 10th Double-Double But Men's Basketball Falls to Trinity

HARTFORD, Conn. – Junior captain Eric Savage scored 20 points and sophomore Luke Rogers turned in his tenth double-double of the season, but it wasn't enough as the Tufts men's basketball team fell to Trinity on the road on Sunday in their regular season finale.

The Jumbos are now 11-13 overall this season and finish 4-6 in NESCAC games.  They will be the eighth seed in the upcoming conference tournament.  Trinity is 17-7 with the win and finishes with a 6-4 conference mark.  They finish tied for fourth in the conference standings with Wesleyan and Williams.   

The two teams traded baskets to open play and no team led by more than five points for the first nine minutes of play. Ahead by three the Bantams got a three from Christian Porydzy and then a layup from Kyle Padmore.  They grew their lead to 11, 21-10, with a three from Connor Merinder with 9:33 left in the half. 

The Jumbos got back in it, as Rogers turned in two free throws and then a three from classmate Brennan Morris brought the Jumbos within six, 21-15, with 8:07 left in the half.  But, Padmore added another three and a layup from Francis Uzorh put the hosts up 13, 28-15, with 6:20 left in the half.  Savage answered with one from downtown for the Jumbos, and the two teams traded baskets for the remainder of the first half.  The Bantams took a 40-30 lead into the break.    

Out of the half the Bantams got a layup from Donald Jorden and then a three from Merinder to give them a 15-point lead, 45-30, early in the second half. The Jumbos answered with two free throws from Morris, and after a Bantam layup, Morris added a three the bring the Jumbos within 12, 47-35, about four minutes into the half. After a Bantam layup from Jorden, Savage sunk a three that brought the Jumbos within 11, 49-38, with 16:12 remaining. 

But, that would be as close as the Jumbos would get, and the Bantams were able to grow their lead.  They picked up an 87-67 win. 

Savage finished with 20 points and six rebounds for the Jumbos. Rogers added 14 points and 11 rebounds along with three blocks.  Morris collected 13 points and freshman Carson Cohen added seven points and four assists off the bench for the Jumbos.  

Jorden was the point leader for the Bantams with 20 points and he also added ten rebounds and three steals.  Padmore turned in 16 points and six assists off the bench for the Bantams.  Also turning in big numbers from the bench was Porydzy, who added 11 points.  Joe Bell finished with 14 points for the hosts. 

The Jumbos will be back in action on Saturday when they travel for a NESCAC Quarterfinal match up. Their opponent will not be determined until Amherst and Hamilton play on Tuesday night.
