BOSTON - The Tufts University men's basketball team's comeback attempt ran out of time in the Jumbos' 90-81 loss at Suffolk University on Thursday night.
Sophomore Jay Dieterle (pictured), playing in his second collegiate game, scored 33 points in 30 minutes off the bench for the Jumbos. He made 11 of 15 shots, including seven for 11 on threes and also had eight rebounds. Suffolk's Nate Hale was equally impressive with 29 points on 10 for 18 shooting with four threes.
Dieterle's defensive rebound and three-pointer pulled Tufts within nine (76-67) with 4:36 remaining in the second half. Hale hit a three at the other end though, giving the hosts a 79-67 margin.
A lay-up by Jumbo freshman Bobby Stewart, a block by Brennan Morris and a steal with an and-one by Dylan Thoerner narrowed the Suffolk advantage to 79-72 with 3:20 left in regulation. Dieterle had another three at 2:53 for an 80-72 score, but the Jumbos wouldn't get another basket until the final minute as the Rams held on for the win.
The Jumbos had finished the first half on a 13-4 run to close within 45-31. Dieterle got hot and made three trifectas and scored 11 points during the stretch. He had 15 at the half, while Hale had 11 for Suffolk who shot 56.3 percent (18/32) from the floor over the first 20 minutes.
Suffolk opened the second half with 10 of the first 11 points. Tufts chipped away and got the margin down to 11 (67-56) on a Dieterle three at the mid-way point of the second half. The Rams were able to keep their distance until the Jumbos threatened late getting within seven, but it wasn't enough.
Tufts was without its All-American Luke Rogers, with freshman Trumann Gettings doing an admirable job in his place with 15 points on five for six shooting from the field and five of seven at the line. Tyler Aronson finished with 12 points, six rebounds and two steals for the Jumbos. Carson Cohen had six assists. Dieterle's 33 are the most by a Jumbo since Eric Savage went for 35 against Bowdoin on January 31, 2019.
Aidan Sullivan with 18 points, seven rebounds and four assists supported Hale for Suffolk. William Rowe added 15 points, four rebounds and three assists.
The Jumbos travel to St. Joseph (Conn.) for Saturday afternoon action at 2:00 pm.
