Men's Rowing 2nd Varsity 8 Wins Twice on Opening Day

MALDEN - The Tufts University men's rowing team's second varsity eight won races over Coast Guard and Williams to highlight the team's spring racing season opening day on Malden River Saturday.

The Jumbo 2V8 of Rachel Weinberg (c), Drew Niles (pictured), George Lakis, Harrison Sweet, Spenser Walsh, Corbin Steck, David Gantt, Teddy Schneider andRyan Kane started with a 6:22.42 time across the 2,000-meter course to defeat Williams (6:28.02). The Jumbos later defeated Coast Guard by a good margin with a 6:39.45 time to 6:50.11 for the Bears.

Tufts' first varsity eight split two races against Coast Guard (win) and Williams (loss). Early in the day the Jumbos were edged by the Ephs 6:21.75 to 6:25.58. They evened their mark for the day with a nearly 30-second win over Coast Guard 6:21.21 to 6:50.81. The Jumbo first team featured Rachel Halliday (c), Nick Kuranda, Alex Maykel, William Landers, Ryan Hankins, Eoghan Downey, Alex Williams, John Griffin and Henry Ross.

A third varsity eight of Tara Curran (c), Andrew Fisher, Nicolas Briano, Charlie Guerra, Gonzalo Escajadillo, Henry Gray, Joey Montalto, Will Rubin and Brendan McHugh also rowed on Saturday and fell to Williams in a good race 6:41.32 to 6:47.93.

The Jumbos also fielded a fourh varsity eight - Logan McLennan (c), Akash Maney, Kenan Oktay, Chris Millay, Alden Taylor, Nick Gravenites, Peter Battle, Ian Knightly, James Luck - that did not have competition on Saturday, but rowed some time trials.

Bates, UMass and Wesleyan visit Malden River for races next Saturday.
