Men's Rowing Defeats Top-Ranked Bates in Saturday Races at Malden River

MALDEN - The Tufts University men's rowing team won all eight of its races at Malden River on Saturday, including first and second varsity competitions against Bates, UMass and Wesleyan. In the inaugural IRCA Coaches Poll released earlier this week, Tufts was #3 and Bates was #1.

The Jumbo 1V8 took its semifinal heat over UMass with a 6:07.83 time over the 2,000-meter course to a 6:19.98 mark for UMass. In the final against Bates later in the day, the Jumbos won a close race over the Bobcats 6:01.88 to 6:05.96. The line-up for Tufts had Rachel Halliday as coxswain along with Nick Kuranda, Alex Maykel, William Landers, Ryan Hankins, Eoghan Downey (pictured), Alex Williams, John Griffin and Henry Ross.

The Tufts 2V8 won by more than 10 seconds over UMass (6:23.5 to 6:34.9) in the semifinal, then topped Bates in the final with a 6:09.36 mark to 6:15.99. Rowing for the Jumbos was Rachel Weinberg as coxswain, Drew Niles, George Lakis, Harrison Sweet, Spenser Walsh, Corbin Steck, David GanttTeddy Schneider and Ryan Kane.

Tufts also won a pair of third varsity eight contests and two four-man races. The 3V8 posted a close victory over Bates (6:12.9 to 6:14.81) and won 6:28.84 to 7:27.81 over UMass. Tufts' 3V8 was Tara Curran as coxswain, Andrew Fisher, Nicolas Briano, Henry Gray, Gonzalo Escajadillo, Charlie Guerra, Joey Montalto, Will Rubin and Brendan McHugh. The M3V4 won 7:15.32 to 7:30.84 over Bates, and the M4V4 was victorious 7:13.28 to 8:20.58 against Wesleyan. The 3V4 line-up was Raina Shah as coxswain, Kenan Oktay, Ian Knightly, Chris Millay and James Luck, while the 4V4 had Shah, Akash Maney, Alden Taylor, Nick Gravenites and Peter Battle.

The Jumbos travel to WPI for the Baker Cup competition a week from tomorrow.
