Men's Rowing Wins Baker Cup Again Versus WPI

WORCESTER - In the return of the Baker Cup men's varsity eight race today, Tufts University defeated WPI on Lake Quinsigamond to retain the Cup it won in 2019 when the race was last held.

In a match-up between the #2 Jumbos and the #6 Engineers in the IRCA poll, the 1V8 race for the Baker Cup was won by the Jumbos in a 6:06.9 time that was 2.3 seconds faster than WPI's 6:09.2. The winning Jumbo eight was Rachel Halliday (cox), Nick Kuranda, Alex Maykel (pictured), Max Landers, Ryan Hankins, Eoghan Downey, George Lakis, John Griffin and Henry Ross.

The Jumbos won three of their four races on the day overall. The third varsity eight took WPI 6:37.1 to 6:42:11, a healthy five-second margin. Tufts' line-up was Logan McLennan (cox), Joey Montalto, Charlie Guerra, Will Rubin, Gonzalo Escajadillo, Chris Millay, Alden Taylor, Akash Maney and Brendan McHugh.

The Tufts fourth varsity needed to hot seat several rowers due to being short-handed and powered to a 6:38.7 time to win by almost 40 seconds against WPI (7:17.7). The Jumbo team was Raina Shah (cox), Ian Knightly, Kenan Oktay, Chris Millay, Alden Taylor, Nick Gravenites, Griffin Hardy, Akash Maney and James Luck.

WPI defeated the Jumbos in the second varsity eight race 6:22.8 to 6:25.51 by Tufts. Rachel Weinberg (cox), Drew Niles, Nick Briano, Henry Gray, Spenser Walsh, Corbin Steck, Dave Gantt, Andrew Fisher and Ryan Kane were the Tufts eight.

Tufts will race against #1 Williams College next Saturday.
