Men's Rowing Sending Four Eights to Saturday's New England Championships

MEDFORD - Four Tufts University men's rowing eights will compete at the 2022 New England Rowing Championships coming up on Saturday at Lake Quinsigamond.

On the schedule, the Jumbo third varsity eight will row first in the first heat at 9:57 am. The second varsity will also be in its first heat at 10:42 am, and the first varsity is part of third heat at 11:45 am. The Jumbo fourth varsity will race in a straight three-team final at 3:03 pm. Finals for the third varsity are set for 3:30 pm (petite) and 3:39 pm (grand). Three 2V8 finals will go off at 4:15 pm (third), 4:24 pm (second) and 4:33 pm (grand). The varsity eight finals will close the day with the third final at 5:09 pm, the petite final at 5:18 pm and the grand final at 5:27 pm.

Tufts' 1V8 line-up will have Rachel Halliday (cox), William Landers, Alex Maykel, Harrison Sweet, Ryan Hankins, Eoghan Downey, Alex Williams (pictured), John Griffin and Henry Ross.

For the Jumbos in second varsity races, Rachel Weinberg iss coxswain with an eight of Drew Niles, George Lakis, Nick Briano, David Gantt, Corbin Steck, Spenser Walsh, Teddy Schneider and Ryan Kane.

The Jumbo 3V8 will be steered by Tara Curran and propeled by Andrew Fisher, Joey Montalto, Henry Gray, Gonzalo Escajadillo, Charlie Guerra, Alden Taylor, Will Rubin and Brendan McHugh.

For the fourth Tufts eight, the expected line-up is Logan McLennan (cox), Akash Maney, Kenan Oktay, Chris Millay, Peter Battle, Nick Gravenites, Griffin Hardy, Ian Knightly and James Luck.

Back in 2019, the last time the NERC was held, Tufts' 1V8 was fifth in the grand final for their highest finish since 1992. Tufts' second and third varsity eights both won their petite finals. Williams was part of Tufts' first varsity eight, Curran was coxswain for the second varsity, Ross was stroke for the 2V8 and Gantt was part of the third varsity.

This spring, Tufts' first varsity eight has a good 5-2 record including victories against Coast Guard, UMass, Bates, WPI and the MIT Lightweight. In 2V8 races the Jumbos are also 5-2, defeating Williams, Coast Guard, UMass, Bates and MIT Lightweight. Five 3V8 wins have been earned versus Coast Guard, Bates, UMass, WPI and MIT Lightweight. The Jumbo fourth varsity raced twice and won both against WPI and Williams.
