WORCESTER – The Tufts University men's rowing team had fourths in the first, second and third varsity eight competitions at the New England Rowing Championships (NERC) at Lake Quinsigamond on Saturday.
Second in their heat with a 5:52.751 time, the Jumbos clocked 5:53.499 in the Grand Final for their fourth-place finish. Williams College won the race (5:44.986), followed by Holy Cross (5:47.036), MIT (5:49.832) and the Jumbos. The finish was an improvement by one spot over the fifth-place in 2019 – the last time NERC was held – which was the 1V8's best since 1992. Tufts' 1V8 line-up had Rachel Halliday (cox), William Landers, Alex Maykel, Harrison Sweet (pictured), Ryan Hankins, Eoghan Downey, Alex Williams, John Griffin and Henry Ross.
In today's second varsity eight races, the Jumbos were second in their heat with a 6:14.167 mark. Then they raced to fourth in the Grand Final at 6:05.124, behind winner Williams (5:53.454), Holy Cross and MIT. Rachel Weinberg was coxswain with an eight of Drew Niles, George Lakis, Nick Briano, David Gantt, Corbin Steck, Spenser Walsh, Teddy Schneider and Ryan Kane.
For third varsity eight, Tufts was second in the heat (6:35.410) and had a 6:21.894 for fourth in the grand final. Holy Cross won the GF (6:04.447). The seating for the 3V8 was Tara Curran (cox) with Andrew Fisher, Joey Montalto, Henry Gray, Gonzalo Escajadillo, Charlie Guerra, Alden Taylor, Will Rubin and Brendan McHugh.
Tufts also had a fourth varsity boat which competed in a three- team race today and placed second in 6:17.306. That group was Logan McLennan (cox), Akash Maney, Kenan Oktay, Chris Millay, Peter Battle, Nick Gravenites, Griffin Hardy, Ian Knightly and James Luck.
The Jumbos are at the National Invitational Rowing Championships a week from tomorrow.
