Jumbo Men Start at IRA Rowing Championships on Friday

MEDFORD - The Tufts University men's rowing team will begin acion at the 2022 Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) Natonal Championship Regatta on Friday at Mercer Lake in West Windsor, New Jersey. The Jumbos will be competing in varsity eight and varsity four preliminary races.

The IRA National Championship is the oldest college rowing championship in the United States, and for the first-time ever in 2022 it includes a Division III Championship. Seven teams earned the inaugural DIII berths including the Jumbos, who are coached by George Munger. Williams, Bates, Trinity, WPI, Hamilton and Washington College will also compete.

Each team's first varsity eight will go head-to-head twice in seven-lane racing at the historic venue. On the Friday (June 3) they will race for lane placement in Satuday's (June 4) championship event. Friday's race goes off at 9:50 am and Sunday's championship event is scheduled for 11:40 am.

Expected to compete for Tufts are Rachel Halliday (cox), Nick Kuranda, David Gantt, Max Landers, Alex Williams, John Griffin, Ryan Hankins, Eoghan Downey and Henry Ross.

The Jumbos have been ranked second or third in the IRA Division III poll all season, and are currently #3. Williams is at #1, Bates is second, Triinity is fourth and Hamilton is fifth as of May 20. Tufts was third behind Williams and Bates at the NESCAC competition held as part of the National Invitational Rowing Championships on Lake Quinsigamond in Worceser on May 8. The Jumbos were fourth in the grand final at the New England Rowing Championships on April 30, ahead of Bates and behind Williams.

Tufts will have a varsity four in action as well which will include Rachel Weinberg (cox), George Lakis, Harrison Sweet, Spenser Walsh and Teddy Schneider. They will be one of 27 teams to row a time trial on Friday which begins at 11:20 am. From there the top 18 will advance to one of three ABC semifinals (3:30, 3:40, 3:50 Friday) and the remaining nine will go to one of two DEF semifinals (4:00, 4:10 Friday). Again depending on results, the MV4 will hold 5th Level, 4th Level, 3rd Level, Petite and Grand Finals on Saturday (10:20, 10:30, 10:50, 11:10 and 11:30 am Saturday, respectively).
