George Munger was promoted to head coach of the Tufts Univeristy men's rowing team during the summer 2019. He was previously an assistant coach for the Jumbos for three years starting in 2016, including serving as the program's recruiting coordinator.
In 2018-19, the Tufts men placed fifth in the grand final at the New England Rowing Championships (NERC) for their highest finish at the event since 1992. The Jumbos won their five-team heat that day, edging eights from UMass and Boston College to earn a spot in the grand final for the third straight year. Their 2020 spring season - Munger's first as head coach - was canceled due to Covid, but in the fall the Jumbos placed first in five races at the Head of the Fish regatta, including the novice eight, in which they bested 18 other teams.
Munger was an assistant coach at Boston University prior to coming to Tufts. He went to the University of Minnesota where he rowed in the men's heavyweight 8+ for three years and in the men's lightweight 8+ for a year.
While in college he started coaching at Twin Cities Youth Rowing, where he remained until moving to Boston as an IRL fellow. As part of Community Rowing, Inc. (CRI) he completed an intensive yearlong Advanced Certificate in Rowing Leadership fellowship program for future leaders through a curriculum based on both academic and experiential learning methodologies.
