Men's Soccer Continues Unbeaten Streak after Downing Wheaton, 6-0

MEDFORD – The #1 Tufts University men's soccer team cruised to a 6-0 victory in nonconference action over Wheaton College on Tuesday night at Bello Field.

Senior Joe Braun tied for the team-high with three points and three shots.

The Jumbos improve to 5-0-0 on the season while the Lyons fall to 3-4-0.

The Lyons started the contest with possession, but in the fourth minute junior Travis Van Brewer sent a corner kick from the right corner to the middle of the box that found classmate Biagio Paoletta for a header goal. The goal is the first of the season for Paoletta.

The Jumbos continued the attack in the early minutes and earned two strong opportunities as senior Brett Rojas fired a shot on goal that was saved. The next came when junior Alex Ratzan won a footrace down into the left corner. He found senior Gavin Tasker who sent a cross towards the middle of the goal for classmate Joe Braun, but his redirection shot went wide. A strong opportunity came in the 18th minute when Rojas sent a service from the right side of the box towards the left post, but the Lyon goalkeeper, Cameron Millington, jumped off his line to intercept the play.

Tufts extended their lead in the 22nd minute when senior Zach Lane sent a cross from the right corner to the left side, but it was too long. However, Tasker was there to save the ball from going out of bounds. He sent a pass to the top of the 18-yard box for Braun. He fired a shot that was saved by a diving Millington, but he allowed a rebound which Ratzan cleaned up for his third goal of the season.

Just three minutes later, two golden opportunities came for the Jumbos as a Lane shot forced Millington to make a diving save. Tasker again saved the play and found Van Brewer in the top left of the box. He made a move to his right that gave him enough space to fire a shot, but it was saved.

The Jumbos added another tally in the 37th minute on a header by sophomore Ian Daly. Senior Drew Stern held a ball on the left sideline and made a short pass to junior Mati Cano. Cano sent a ball down to classmate Max Jacobs who had an opportunity to shoot, but made a cross with the outside of his right foot which found an uncovered, crashing Daly. That is the second tally on the season for Daly.

Tufts jumped on the attack early in the second half as Van Brewer fired a shot from the top of the box for the fourth goal of the contest. Braun added a fifth after he chested down a pass from Lane in the middle of the box. He then got free space and fired home a right-footed strike.

The best opportunity for Wheaton came in the 50th minute as they earned a corner kick. The kick was taken by JD Souza and it found Shawn McCall. Sophomore Erich Kindermann made the save on McCall's shot.

The Jumbos added another goal in the 79th minute as senior Zach Trevorrow sent a corner kick to the middle of the box which found freshman Rolando Rabines for his first career goal.

Junior Will Harned and Kindermann split halves in the contest. Kindermann made the lone save for the Jumbos. Harned earned the win and improves to 5-0-0 on the season. Millington and Diego Medina split time for the Lyons. They combined to make six saves Millington is now 1-2-0.

The Jumbos will return to action on Saturday when they host Colby College in NESCAC play at Bello Field. They are slated to start at 2:30 pm. The Lyons return to the field on Saturday at MIT in their NEWMAC opener at 4:30 pm.
