CLERMONT, Fla. – The New Paltz softball team scored unearned runs in the seventh and eighth innings to take a dramatic 2-1 win over Tufts in Florida on Friday afternoon.
|Allison Tilton hurled seven solid innings|
With the Jumbos' lead at 1-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh, New Paltz's Julia Perhacs took second on an outfield error. She was sacrificed to third and scored on a sac fly by Danielle Bruno tying the score at 1-1.
With the tie-breaker in effect, Tufts had its runner on third base with one out in the eighth and couldn't score. For the Hawks, tie-breaker runner Michaela Damore went to third on a Tufts error and scored the game-winning run on a one-out single by Taylor Leonette.
This one smarts for the Jumbos, who left 13 runners on base and couldn't capitalize on a fine pitching performance from sophomore Allison Tilton. She went seven innings giving up two hits and an unearned run before giving way to freshman Kristina Haghdan in the eighth.
Tufts scored its lone run in the third when sophomore CF Maggie Lebinski led off with a single and went to second on an error during the play. She scored when freshman RF Emma Della Volpe followed with a single to right. However, Tufts had the bases loaded later in the inning with one out and could not add to the score.
The Jumbos also left two on in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings.
Hilton gave up a two-out double to Shannon Fee in the first and stranded Bruno on second after a base hit in the fifth.
Lebinski and junior SS Christian Cain had a two hits apiece for Tufts.
The Jumbos (8-3) will play Wellesley College right after this one, while New Paltz (6-8) finished its Florida schedule and will play at Ramapo next Wednesday.
