Softball Takes Second 8-0, 5-Inning Win of the Day Versus Grinnell on Monday

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Tufts University softball team posted its second 8-0, five-inning win of the day against Grinnell College on Monday evening in Florida.

Freshman catcher Alexis Aboulafia hit one of Tufts' five doubles in the third inning.

The Jumbos (6-0) had defeated Plattsburgh State 8-0 in five innings earlier on Monday. Against Grinnell, Tufts had 14 hits and a trio of pitchers combined on a two-hit shutout.

After sophomore starting pitcher Kristina Haghan worked around a hit and walk by the Pioneers in the top of the first, the Jumbos had three hits and plated a run in the bottom of the inning. Sophomore SS Mia Steinberg singled and scored on a double by junior 1B Casey Maggiore.

Haghdan set Grinnell down in order in both the second and third. The Jumbos put up crooked numbers in both of those frames and led 8-0 after three. Junior 3B Jamie Stevens doubled and scored on a single by sophomore RF Reegan Coleman in the second. Coleman later came home on a hit by pitch.

A four-run Jumbo third featured five doubles by freshman catcher Alexis Aboulafia, Stevens (rbi), Coleman (rbi), sophomore 2B Emma Della Volpe (rbi) and senior DH Christian Cain (rbi). Junior LF Maria Ostapovich also singled home a run and scored in the inning.

The Jumbo defense kept the shutout alive in the fourth by cutting down a runner at the plate. After Grinnell sophomore 2B Mya Davis earned a one-out walk, she tried to score on a double by senior 3B Ashley Wehrenberg. However, the Jumbo relay of junior CF Maggie Lebinski to Steinberg at short to Aboulafia at the plate made the play.

Della Volpe, Steinberg, Stevens and Coleman all had two hits for Tufts. Stevens and Coleman scored twice. Cassie Cancemi and Allison Tilton both pitched scoreless innings of relief behind Hagdan, who earned the win.

In addition to Wehrenber's double, Grinnell's only other hit was by freshman SS Maddie Matsubara with a single in the first. Freshman Maddie Draper was the losing pitcher for Grinnell allowing 13 hits and eight runs in three innings.

Tufts will face its biggest challenge of the week so far when they play #12 Rowan tomorrow as well as St. Joseph's, Long Island. Grinnell (0-6) has games against Calvin and Benedictine on Tuesday.
