CLERMONT, Fla. - Josie Steinberg drove home a pair of runs and Lindsay Neumann (pictured) scored three times as the Tufts University softball team opened the last day of their spring trip with a 4-3 win over St. Olaf College on Sunday.
The Jumbos trailed 2-1 after an inning. A single by Steinberg scored Neumann, who had reached by fielder's choice. However, the Oles tallied twice on a Tufts error to take a lead. Anne Fossum walked and then on a sacrifice bunt attemtpt by Shreya Ashok the Jumbos threw the ball into the right field corner and both runners scored.
Tufts took a 3-2 lead with two runs in the top of the third. Kat Yuzefpolsky singled to center field to start it and then St. Olaf couldn't get the out on a fielder's choice by Neumann. Michelle Adelman bunted the runners over and then Steinberg hit a sac fly scoring Yuzefpolsky. An error by the Oles allowed Neumann to score what would be the go-ahead run.
The Jumbos extended the margin to 4-2 on back-to-back doubles by Neumann and Adelman in the top of the fifth inning. St. Olaf got one back after two were out in the bottom of the fifth. Ashok singled to center field and then Kaleigh Santmyer doubled her home. Jumbo starter Sophia DiCocco left her there though as Tufts maintained the lead.
The Oles would get the potential tying run on in the seventh against Jumbo reliever Sky Johnson. However, the game ended on a double play as Rachel Moore caught a line drive and doubled off the runner.
DiCocco won her fifth game with six innings allowing six hits and three runs (one earned). Johnson got the save. Yuzefpolsky had two hits for Tufts.
Andy Conway was 2 for 2 for St. Olaf and Ashok scored twice. Abby Grismer was the losing pitching (4 IP, 6 H, 3 ER).
