Softball Splits NESCAC East Pair at Colby College Friday

WATERVILLE, Maine - The Jumbo softball team had 11 hits in a 7-2 victory at Colby College in the second game of a NESCAC East Division doubleheader to earn a split with the Mules on Friday. Colby's Abby Orso pitched a one-hit shutout for a 3-0 win in the opener.

Game two was tied 1-1 when the Jumbos scored twice in the fourth inning. Josie Steinberg reached first on an error to start the inning, took second on a fly ball and then went to third on an error. She scored on a double by Rachel Moore (pictured), who then scored when Meggie Murphy followed with another two-base hit. Tufts would add two more in the fifth to lead 5-1. Bela Jimenez doubled, went to third on a single by Michelle Adelman, and then they executed a double-steal with Jimenez scoring. Adelman then went to third on a fly ball and scored on a Colby error.

Sophomore Sophia DiCocco pitched six innings allowing six hits and two runs to get the win for Tufts (19-7, 4-1 NESCAC East). She allowed single runs in the first - an rbi double by Colby's Chloe Wilcox - and the fifth - when Logan Luebbe squeezed a run home for the hosts.

Tufts added two more in the top of the sixth on Jimenez single, a triple by Adelman and a single by Steinberg. Adelman finished the game 3 for 4 with three runs and the rbi, Steinberg was 2 for 4 with two rbis and a run and Jimenez went 2 for 4 with two runs. Moore also had two hits. An Adelman single and stolen base and a single by Steinberg had given Tufts a 1-0 lead in the first.

Sam Ahlholm took the game two pitching loss for Colby (7 IP, 11 H, 6 ER). Wilcox and Jackie Hill had two hits each for the Mules (15-9, 4-1).

In game one, Tufts had two on with one out in the top of the first against Orso. However, she got out of the inning and would go on to record her third shutout of the year and improve to 7-2. A single by Adelman in the first would be the Jumbos' only hit.

Colby scored twice in the bottom of the first. Wilcox singled to lead off and went to second on a one-out base hit by Amanda Cabral. Both advanced a base during a strikeout and then scored on a Tufts error.

The Mules added an insurance run in the sixth. With one out Orso singled, and pinch-runner Hannah Masterson took second on a wild pitch. A single by Jackie Hill moved Masterson to third, and then both stole bases with Masterson going home for a 3-0 Mules advantage.

Sky Johnson started for Tufts and struck out 11 in six innings, and none of the three runs she allowed on six hits were earned.

Wilcox had two hits at the top of the Colby order.

The teams will play a single game tomorrow at 11 am to complete the series.
