MEDFORD - Junior center fielder Michelle Adelman doubled, tripled and homered for the Tufts University softball team in a 6-1 victory over Rowan University in Game 3 of the NCAA Regional at Spicer Field on Saturday.
The Jumbos (34-10) advanced to the championship round of the Regional on Sunday when they will play Rowan again at noon. An if-necessary game would follow. Tufts needs to defeat the Profs just once in order to win the Regional and move on to the Super Regional. Two Rowan victories would give them the title.
Tufts jumped right on Rowan starter Emily August today, with Adelman doubling home Meggie Murphy and then scoring on a sacrifice fly by Josie Steinberg in the first inning. Adelman then tripled with one out in the third and scored on a single by Bela Jimenez for a 3-0 Tufts lead.
Meanwhile, Sophia DiCocco started for the second straight day and pitched four scoreless innings before Rowan scored in the fifth. Liz McCaffery singled to the pitcher, Korie Hague singled to left field and then a ground ball out moved them to second and third. Breanna Bryant got the rbi on a fielder's choice pulling the Profs within 3-1.
Tufts head coach Lauren Ebstein went to sophomore Sky Johnson in the sixth and she pitched two scoreless frames to finish off the win. The Jumbo bats assisted, adding two in the fifth and one in the sixth. Steinberg and Keila McCabe hit rbi singles in the fifth and Adelman hit a solo home run in the sixth.
DiCocco improved to 17-5 with the win, allowing two hits and one run. Adelman finished 3 for 3 with four runs and two rbis. Jimenez had two hits and Steinberg two rbis.
August took the loss for Rowan (34-9), allowing eight hits and five runs in 4.1 innings.
