Softball Will Travel to WPI For NCAA Super Regional Round

MEDFORD - Follwoing a walk-off victory to capture the NCAA Regional at Spicer Field over the weekend, the Tufts University softball team will play at WPI in the Super Regional round this weekend (May 20-21).

Head coach Lauren Ebstein's Tufts team (35-10) had the exciting 3-2 victory against Rowan University on Sunday to win the Regional. However, the Jumbos were the strongest team all weekend with a 3-0 record including a 4-1 win against Muhlenberg and an earlier 6-1 victory over Rowan on Saturday.

WPI (33-14), led by head coach Heather Ross, was similarly successful at the NCAA Regional in Glenside, Pennsylvania, winning three games 7-6 over Johnson & Wales, 3-2 versus host Arcadia and 6-2 against Arcadia again.

The teams will play a best two-out-of-three series in the Super Regional at WPI's Rooftop Field. Game 1 is scheduled for Friday at 2:00 pm, followed by Game 2 on Saturday at 1:00 pm. An if-necessary Game 3 would be Saturday at 3:30 pm. The series winner moves on to the NCAA Finals in Salem, Virginia May 26-31.

The Jumbos rebounded at the Regional after a disappointing 1-0 loss to Amherst College in the NESAC final at home on May 8. Tufts earned an at-large NCAA invitation, the program's 20th bid overall, and now was a 71-33 mark in NCAA games. The Jumbos won three consecutive NCAA titles from 2013-15. They are looking for their second straight NCAA Finals berth and eighth overall.

WPI's NCAA history includes a pair of wins over Tufts back in 2016, as well as an NCAA loss to the Jumbos in 2019. The Engineers are in their fourth NCAA berth overall and have a 10-6 record. They are the 2022 NEWMAC champions, winning three out of four games in the conference tournament including 4-3 against MIT in the final.

Tufts and WPI played earlier this year in a neutral-site game at Williams College on April 18 won by WPI 4-2.

The Jumbo and Engineer offenses are similar, with Tufts averaging 5.4 runs per game and WPI at 5.3 per game. Tufts has been better defensively, giving up 1.9 runs per contest compared to 3.15 by the Engineers.

Information about ticket prices and live coverage of this weekend's games will be added to this release later this week.
