Women's Basketball Opens Season with 86-48 Win Over Roger Williams

BOSTON – The Tufts University women's basketball team earned an 86-48 victory over Roger Williams University in the Jumbo coaching debut of Jill Pace on Friday night.

Molly Ryan led the Jumbos with 19 points, making 3 of 5 three-pointers.

Playing their season-opener in the Tufts Tip-Off Tournament, the Jumbos were led by 19 points, six assists and three steals from sophomore Molly Ryan and 18 points with 10 rebounds by senior co-captain Erica DeCandido. The game was played at UMass Boston due to an NCAA Volleyball Regional being held at Cousens Gymnasium.

Roger Williams (1-1) was led by sophomore Karli Opalka with 14 points.

The Hawks led 11-8 early after a jumper by senior Sam Leone, but the Jumbos closed the first quarter on a 10-2 run to lead 18-13 after 10 minutes. Then they outscored Roger Williams 26-13 in the second quarter for a 44-26 halftime lead. Threes by Ryan and senior Cailin Harrington helped give Tufts the lead at the end of the first. Then DeCandido scored 10 points and Ryan had eight as Tufts shot 11 for 19 (57.9 percent) in the second quarter as the Jumbos mounted an 18-point advantage.

The Jumbos would add three points to their lead in the third quarter and then finished off the Hawks with a 25-7 fourth-quarter advantage. Seven points by senior Sadie Otley and five off the bench by junior Angela Alibrandi in the fourth helped Tufts extend the margin of victory to 38 points.

Pace, who was hired in June following the departure of former coach Carla Berube to Princeton, receive double-digit scoring from four of her five starters. Junior Emily Briggs added 11 with six rebounds and Harrington scored 10. The Jumbos hit 34 of 70 shots (48.6 percent) and earned a 45-27 rebound advantage. Alibrandi finished with eight points and four boards in 11 minutes off the bench.

Opalka made seven of 11 shots en route to her 14 points for RWU. Leone finished with 10 points and junior Sam Mancinelli added nine with four rebounds and four steals. Sophomore Emily Yonych had a team-high five rebounds off the bench.

Both teams continue play in the Tufts Tip-Off Tournament tomorrow with the Hawks meeting MIT at 2 pm and Tufts played SUN New Paltz at 4.
