Women's Fencing Earns 2nd at NEIFC Championships

WALTHAM - The Tufts University women's fencing team finished second out of 15 teams at the New England Intercollegiate Fencing Conference (NEIFC) Championships hosted by Brandeis University on Saturday.

This was the first time that the Jumbos competed at the NEIFC meet since 2018, when they finished seventh. Today they made a jump of five places since then, finishing behind only Brown University. The Jumbos won 97 of their 119 individual bouts today, just three victories behind Brown (100/119). Third-place Wellesley College won 92 of 119.

The Jumbo sabre squad was second out of the 15 teams winning 34 of their 39 bouts. The foil group won 34 of 40 and placed third. Epee won in 29 of 40 contests to finish fith.

Individually, each weapon had A, B and C pools that competed in a preliminary round. The top six from A's, top four from B's and top two in Cs then fenced together for individual results. Freshman Shannon Chen (pictured) medaled with a third-place in foil, freshman Olivia Tomasello was third in epee to medal and freshman Anat Katz medaled in sabre by also finishing third. Also in sabre, freshman Millie Girardi was sixth and senior captain Bella McKinney placed eighth. Junior Kaitlyn Gill earned seventh in epee, while sophomore Sydnee Lau finished fifth in foil.

Next for Tufts is the NCAA Regionals coming up March 13 at Vassar College.
