Gill, Lau Receive All-Region Recognition in Women's Fencing

MEDFORD - The United States Fencing Coaches Association (USFCA) announced the recipients of its 2021-22 All-Region awards and junior Kaitlyn Gill and sophomore Sydnee Lau from the Tufts University team have been recognized on te All-Northeasat Division III Team.

These awards are determined based on results and field size at each of the NCAA Regional Competitions. Tufts competed at the NCAA Northeast Regional hosted by Vassar College on March 13. Gill in epee and Lau in foil both fenced into the third round of pools before they were eliminated, just missing the 12-person finals in each weapon.

Seeded 22nd in epee, Gill earned 19th place at the Regional competition. She won three out of four in the first pool and three out of six in the second to advance as one of the final 21. She was eliminated there. Gill is one of six to earn All-Northeast for Division III in epee.

Lau finished 18th overall in foil. As the #19 seed entering the event, she earned a bye for the first round of pools. She won three of her six bouts in the second pool to qualify as one of 21 fencers to advance to the third pool. There she was eliminated. Lau is one of eight to earn the All-Northeast distinction for the foil weapon.

Tufts enjoyed one of its finest seasons under head coach David Sach this year, finishing third in the Northeast Fencing Conference and at #3 in the USFCA Division III poll.
