Gable Wins NESCAC Women's Lacrosse Honor After Jumbos Win Title

MEDFORD - Junior Becca Gable has been named the NESCAC Women's Lacrosse Player of the Week for her work defensively over the weekend helping Tufts win the 2022 conference championship.

Head coach Courtney Shute's Jumbo team won their second consecutive conference title with a 10-7 win over Colby in the semifinals on Saturday and a 9-8 victory at Middlebury in Sunday's championship game. The Jumbos (15-3) were the third seed entering the tourney and defeated the top two seeds.

Gable was assigned to face-guard both teams' top goal scorers (Colby's Annie Eddy and Middlebury's Jane Earley) and held both to zero goals. This contributed in a large way to the seven goals scored by Colby being their second-fewest of the season, and Middlebury's eight goals their lowest output since the 2019 season. Colby had been averaging 14.7 goals per game and Middlebury 15.9 per contest entering the weekend.

Gable's conference honor is her first and the third straight for Tufts this season. Senior goalie Molly Laliberty was recognized on April 25 and Margie Carden was named last week on May 2.

For the season, Gable is part of a Tufts defense that has allowed just 37 goals in the last six games (6.17 per game). Their 7.13 goals against average overall is second in NESCAC and among the national top 20. Gable has 14 ground balls and six caused turnovers this spring, numbers that don't tell the story of her outstanding 1v1 defensive skills.
