Toland Wins A Division In Return, Leads Women's Sailing to 4th at MIT

Talia Toland CAMBRIDGE - Talia Toland returned to sailing competition at Tufts and led the Jumbos to an A division victory at the season-opening Toni Deutsch Regatta hosted by MIT on Saturday and Sunday. The Jumbos finished fourth overall out of 18 schools.

Toland last sailed for the Jumbos in the fall of 2019 when she won the New England single-handed championship and was fourth nationally in the event. In her return to the Jumbos this weekend she skippered the A division boat to a 55 score across 14 races to edge host MIT (57) in the group. Tufts won with a pair of first-place finishes in the final two races sailed by Toland with crew Devin Hart. Caroline Kelly also crewed for Toland during the weekend.

The Jumbos' A score (55) combined with the B finish (137) gave them a 192 total for fourth place. They were behind regatta champion MIT (148), Brown (155) and Yale (173).

Abbie Carlson skippered Tufts' B division dinghy, which was 12th in their group. Jessica Friedman crewed the first through 12th races and Paige Tyler crewed the 13th and 14th. Carlson and Friedman won the second and 10th starts.

A picture perfect day on the Charles River greeted the sailors on Saturday. Temps were in the high 70s with a puffy/shifty W-SW breeze starting at 5-10 knots, but building to the low teens by the afternoon. Racing began at 10 am Sunday with a rapidly increasing W-SW breeze in the 12-18 knot range and temperatures around 80 degrees.
