Freshman Nicole Frankel clinched the team victory in fifth singles.

MEDFORD – The eighth-ranked Tufts University women's tennis team won for the fourth time in their last five matches with a 7-2 victory against Wellesley College on Friday afternoon at Voute Courts.

The Jumbos improved to 7-6 overall by taking two out of three in doubles and winning five of the six singles matches. Wellesley (10-8) lost for the fifth time in their last six matches.

Doubles were tied 1-1 when Jumbo seniors Tomo Iwasaki and Otilia Popa won 8-4 in the #2 match to put the hosts up 2-1 heading into singles. Tufts' Anna Lowy and Kat Wiley had won 8-2 in third doubles, but the Blue evened the count with an 8-5 win by Selina Peng and Libby Chang in first doubles.

Into singles, Tufts won the first three matches to finish and clinched the team victory. Wiley did not lose a set in her sixth singles match and freshman Caroline Garrido won 6-0, 6-3 in fourth singles for a 4-1 Jumbo lead. The clincher was captured by freshman Nicole Frankel, who defeated Cinji Lee 6-2, 6-3 on the fifth singles court.

Sophomore Patricia Obeid continued Tufts' winning ways in third singles 6-4, 6-0. Wellesley earned its lone singles point when Justine Huang defeated freshman Maggie Dorr 4-6, 6-3, 12-10 in first singles. Iwasaki won for Tufts in second singles 6-2, 7-6 (1) for the 7-2 final.

Tufts returns to action tomorrow with a NESCAC match versus Connecticut College. If it's outdoors it will be a 10 am start at Voute Courts, though more likely they will play indoors at the Gantcher Center after the men's match versus the Camels. Wellesley hosts Mount Holyoke tomorrow.
