Today in Baltimore, JHU captured a 2-1 lead in doubles after taking a dramatic 8-7 (8) victory in the #1 match between undefeated pairs. The Blue Jay duo of Anjali Devireddy and Emily Javedan gave Tufts' #1 duo of Maggie Dorr and Caroline Garrido their first loss of the spring.
The Hopkins #2 team of Anjie Kashyap and Sophia Strickland had given the hosts a 1-0 lead with their 8-2 victory against Tufts' Tilly Rigby and Casey Cummings, However, Jumbos Patricia Obeid and Maddie Suk stormed to an 8-0 victory in third doubles over Dhanya Asokumar and Ali Bader to even the match at 1-1 leading to the exciting conclusion of first doubles.
The Jumbos would take care of business in singles. Rigby in #1 singles was first to finish after her 6-3, 6-1 victory over Devireddy. That tied the team score at 2-2. Freshman Zoe Kava then put Tufts in front with her 6-1, 6-1 win in sixth singles against Javedan.
Tufts was in position to clinch the match, however lightning forced the teams inside and delayed play for nearly 90 minutes. Once they resumed though, Tufts junior Nicki Frankel soon finished her 6-2, 6-2 fifth singles win over Asokumar for a 4-2 Jumbo lead. Cummings would get the clincher, defeating Strickland 6-3, 6-2 at #4 to send Tufts to the Elite 8.
The Jumbos were leading the two singles matches that did not finish, Dorr at #2 (6-4, 4-2) and Suk at #3 (3-6, 6-1, 2-0).
Also in Chattanooga later this month, Tufts will have Rigby in singles and the Dorr-Garriodo duo in doubles playing at the NCAA Individual Championships starting on May 28.
