Volleyball Rallies To Defeat Brandeis In Four at Tufts Invitational

MEDFORD – After dropping the first set 25-17 to Brandeis, the Tufts University volleyball came back to win in four on Saturday morning at the Tufts Invitational in Cousens Gym.

Grace Legris Senior tri-captain Cate Desler and junior tri-captain Grace Legris (pictured) both had 10 kills for Tufts. Madie Yu (22) and Ariel Zedrick (16) combined for 38 assists, while Tufts served 12 aces led by Desler's four. Stephane Lee finished with a match-high 21 digs.

Kaisa Newberg led Brandeis (3-3) with 11 kills and just one error in 26 attempts (.385). Lara Verstovsek had six service aces to go with seven kills. Stephanie Borr was strong with 13 digs as well as seven kills.

Brandeis built a 9-3 lead following back-to-back aces by Verstovsek in the first set and the Jumbos couldn't make up the difference. Tufts closed within 13-9 on a Legris kill, but the Judges won six of the next seven to lead 19-10 and went on to win comfortably.

The second set was tight throughout, and was tied at 19-19 when kills by Maya Lightfoot and Legris along with a Brandeis attack error opened up some room for the Jumbos. A point by Yu and an ace from Desler helped the hosts finish off a 25-21 set victory.

Tufts couldn't continue a strong start in the third set, which they led 10-4. Brandeis eventually came back and tied it 17-17 on a Jumbo error. Jennelle Yarwood had three late kills for Tufts and they pulled out a 25-21 win.

The Jumbos were in control of the fourth set 20-13 on a kill by Lightfoot, but Brandeis would make it interesting by scoring points on five of the next six serves. They were within 21-18 on Newberg's kill, but Rileigh Farragher notched a pair of kills late to help the Jumbos wrap up the match with a 25-20 win.

Tufts (3-0) will play Wellesley College to end the Tufts Invitational later on Saturday.
