MEDFORD – The Jumbo volleyball team wrapped up Tufts Invitational play and finished the first week of the season undefeated (4-0) with a convincing three-set win over Wellesley College on Saturday afternoon at Cousens Gym. Set scores were 25-10, 25-12 and 25-16.
Fifteen Jumbos played in the match. Senior Jennifer Ryan led the way offensively with nine kills and no errors on 19 swings for a .474 average. Christine Audette (pictured) did not make any errors either while recording six kills on 12 attempts (.500). Senior Cate Desler served four aces, giving her eight for the day after totaling the same amount earlier against Brandeis. Megan Harrison and Maddie Yu were both in double-digits for digs with 12 and 10 respectively.
Wellesley (1-3) received a match-high 14 kills from Nicole Doerges, who double-doubled with 10 digs also. Claire Bialek averaged seven digs per set with 21 total.
Desler served three of her service aces within the first 15 points of the match, helping Tufts take a 12-3 advantage. The Blue got as close as 12-6, but the Jumbos finished with a 13-4 run and won the set on a kill by Grace Legris.
Wellesley was within 10-7 in the second set following a kill by Kate Salembier. However, Tufts scored the next 11 points as Yarwood produced four kills and Audette added three helping the Jumbos to a 21-7 lead. The hosts would win the set on a service ace by Harrison.
The Blue would have their only lead of the match in the third set, at 4-3 on Doerges' kill. They were within 16-14 on Mia Maxwell's kill, but Tufts finished the match on a 9-2 run for the victory. Two kills by Jessica Sanderson helped finish the day for the Jumbos.
Tufts will hit the road for the first time this season when they play at Brandeis on Tuesday. Wellesley is at Babson that day.
