MEDFORD – Tufts University Women's Cross Country officially opened their season with a second-place finish on Saturday morning at the Trinity College Bantam Invitational at Wickham Park, with a score of 50 points.
Wesleyan University earned first place in the event with 29 points and the University of New Haven finished behind the jumbos in third place with 91 points, just barely beating out Westfield State University, who finished in fourth with 95 points.
Individually, Tufts freshman Haley Nilsson finished in third place in the race with a time of 21:00.7 for five kilometers in her collegiate debut. Junior Kate Bidgood (pictured) was just over 30 seconds behind Nilsson with a time of 21:31.3 which was good for fifth place in the race. Another Tufts freshman runner finished in the top 10, as Carly Rinko put up a time of 21:36.5 to earn seventh place. In 16th place was freshman Arianna Cozza with a time of 22:08.8, while junior Stephanie Mittaz finished shortly after her with a time of 22:12.5 to be the fifth Jumbo to cross the finish line.
Freshman Geri Tabbachino and junior Sarah Sandlow also put up good times to finish in 22nd and 23rd place respectively. Tabbachino finished with a time of 22:27.1 while Sandlow finished with a time of 22:32.5.
Madeline Huh (22:37.9), Kendall Roberts (22:44.0), Rory McGrath (22:49.6), Marissa Zelten (23:35.1), Alex Walter (24:07.9), Ella Johnson (24:15.3), and Taylor Roddy (26:59.8) also competed for the Jumbos in the event. The race featured 73 runners overall.
Tufts will travel to the Bates Invitational at Pineland Farms in New Gloucester, Maine next Saturday, September 18 for their next event.
